Since noën was founded in 2006, the owners Claudia and Malte Schindler have been in the business of creating jewellery that embraces all aspects of an item of jewellery: clear, well thought-out design language, raw materials obtained responsibly from transparent sources, and sustainable production in their own manufactory in Germany. In Short: Jewellery that adorns you without compromising your ethical values.
Even then, Claudia and Malte Schindler had a vision that one day there would be an official seal for fair trade jewellery. But until 2015, when it became possible to obtain certified Fairtrade gold in Germany, Claudia and Malte used to travel to the gold mines of South America to buy organic, sustainably produced gold locally; and their aim was to create the first sustainably produced jewellery in Germany.
Of course, noën was also one of the first German jewellery companies to be certified in 2015, when the Fairtrade Mark for Gold was introduced in Germany. noën is proud of that fact.
noën only processes Fairtrade Gold from small-scale mining cooperatives in South
America that are certified to Fairtrade standards. Fairtrade certified gold gives miners better living and working conditions. For example, the workers at certified mines receive a minimum price of 95% of the London World Market Price (LBM London Bullion Market) for their gold. And an additional Fairtrade Premium of USD 2,000 per kilogram of fine gold.
The Fairtrade certification standards require miners to take certain measures, such as protective clothing and health and safety training. They prohibit child labour and promote responsible, sustainable use of chemicals in gold mining.
Each item of gold jewellery produced by noën is 100% certified Fairtrade gold. What is certified is the amount of gold contained in the alloy, not the other constituents in the alloy. More information about Fairtrade Gold can be found at: www.info.fairtrade.net
All of the diamonds that, in addition to shimmering gold, make noën jewellery pieces special, come from conflict-free areas. Wherever possible, noën obtains its diamonds from trans- parent sources, where trading and processing the stones promotes sustainable development. All diamonds are certified in accordance with the Kimberley Process Agreement and hence do not provide finance for wars and conflicts. Here too, we aim to go one step further: by upcycling diamonds, we protect the environment, promote sustainable trade and increase transparency.
We like to work mainly with diamonds that have been recently cut and graduated by our diamond experts; and this is what makes noën jewellery simply perfect and unique. Diamonds in an item of noën jewellery create new values out of existing ones. They will be passed down from one generation to the next and will continue to exist through time.
